Health Update 10/18/22
Today is my first day of dialysis. After four months on the kidney transplant list, we have been unable to find a donor and my health has unfortunately gotten worse. Over the last couple weeks, I’ve gone into severe kidney failure. My doctors and I decided it is time to start peritoneal dialysis. The decision to begin dialysis is not an easy one. It is an experience that forces me to accommodate for daily life-saving treatments that have their own long list of side effects.
For those of you that are unfamiliar, dialysis is the process of removing toxins and other waste products from the blood. This treatment is done in place of what a healthy kidney should do. Dialysis allows people with end-stage kidney disease to live until they receive a kidney transplant. Dialysis is NOT the same thing as a kidney transplant and is only a temporary solution.
It is a strong possibility that I will be on dialysis for a long time unless we are able to find a match for a living donor kidney transplant. Although this is something that I did not expect to happen so soon, I am still confident that I can regain my health with a kidney transplant. To be clear, I am still in need of a kidney transplant and am still actively looking for a living donor.
