About the Craftsman

Hello,

My name is Michael, and I am the craftsman for New Life Leatherworks. I am excited to bring you some of my handmade leather products! I began working with leather in 2018 after I made a key organizer from one of my old belts. After I lost a few wallets, I decided to make my own. Since then, I have developed a passion for quality materials and working with my hands.

When I was 5 years old, I was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). 5 years later, I found myself needing a liver transplant. Fortunately my Mom was a match for me and she was able to donate a portion of her liver to me. I did quite well with my new liver until last year, 11 years after my first transplant, I was placed on the liver transplant list again because my PSC had come back. I got sicker and sicker until October of 2019 when I was lucky enough to receive my 2nd liver transplant from an unknown donor. This new gift of life has allowed me to keep living my life to the fullest, and do all the things I love to do.

Much like how I was given new life, I find that I am able to give new life to leather through creating quality and long-lasting goods. Skin is the biggest organ in the body, and at its core, leather is essentially just animal skin; In some ways when I craft, I feel like a transplant surgeon by cutting and stitching leather together into a new product the same way that a transplant surgeon sutures together an incision in the operating room. I hope to give the gift of new life through my leatherwork to you. I hope you enjoy!

Most of the names of my wallets are dedicated to a surgeon or doctor that I have had over the years. My logo is actually what my scar looks like on my stomach.
